How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on SidekickSays starts with one question: will this cover fit the truck and the way you use the bed? For our tonneau cover guides, that means your truck, its model years and bed length, and what you carry back there.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the truck

A tonneau cover fits one truck, one range of model years and one bed length. A 5.5 ft F-150 cover won't fit a Super Duty, and a 5 ft Tacoma bed needs a different cover than a 6 ft one.

We show the years and bed length in each guide, and we tell you to check Amazon's Fits Your Vehicle tool before you order.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the cover type, such as soft tri-fold, quad-fold, roll-up, hard folding or retractable. We also look at the profile, the clamps and hardware, the locks, the weather seals and how the cover opens.

Tyger, Gator, Rough Country and the other makers describe their covers in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a cover. We look for patterns, like leaks at the seams, clamps that loosen, gaps at the fit, torn vinyl or a hard install.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A cover that's great for one truck may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Most brands sell a separate cover for each truck, so we check the exact model, year range and bed length behind every link. We look for recall notices before we link a model, and we only link new units.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have installed or driven with every cover in our guides.

We don't call any cover safe, secure or theft-proof, and we give no mileage numbers or waterproof promises. When a maker makes a claim, we label it as the maker's claim.

Our guides don't replace the maker's install sheet. For clamps and mounting, follow the maker's steps, and check the maker's recall page before you buy.
